Why do you need to see a Periodontist?
The following signs may indicate that you have periodontal disease and need to see a Periodontist:
• Red, swollen or tender gums;
• Bleeding while brushing, flossing or eating hard foods;
• Loose teeth;
• Change in the position of your teeth;
• Bad breath; and
• Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth, making your teeth look longer than before.
Unfortunately, some of these signs are not obvious until the disease has reached an advanced stage.
Your First Appointment
At your first visit, the periodontist will discuss the reason for your referral, your concerns and goals of treatment. They will then carry out a very thorough dental examination, assessing the health of your gums. It may be necessary to take clinical photographs and organise x-rays to be taken. If you are in pain, some treatment may be started on the day.
The Periodontist will clearly explain the findings of your examination and discuss your treatment options. They will also take the time to answer any questions that you may have.
A detailed report will be sent to your dentist and if appropriate, your medical doctor and any other specialists involved in your care. This will help to ensure that we can work together to best look after you.
Do I Need a Referral?
Most patients are referred to us by their dentist or medical practitioner. However, you may make an appointment at Kew Periodontics and Dental Implants without having a referral.
If you are concerned that yourself or a family member may have gum disease, or would like to discuss treatment or dental implant options, please call 03 9853 7700 to request an appointment.
